Restore yourself with gentle Qigong:

Let the lightness of Animal Frolics Wu Qin Xi Qigong move you

Let the soft animal of your body love what it loves

— Mary Oliver, poet

For over 20 years, I have taught mind-body classes for special audiences. For the last 10 years, I have taught classes at pain centers and have worked with people one-on-one as part of the functional restoration programs that help people who live with pain find greater mobility and better stress management to help their pain situations. While these restorative Qigong and Tai Chi classes are not a pain treatment in and of themselves, they can be part of your self-care management that helps you find peace in your situation and manage your life better. Well worth checking out!

Please consult with your health care providers to make sure the practice of meditative movement is suitable for you.

The Animal Frolics Wu Qin Xi Qigong is a traditional set of Qigong forms that is meant to build health. The classic five animals are Tiger, Monkey, Deer, Bear, and Bird, but there are many practices! I myself have had at least four teachers of Animal Frolics Qigong, and of course there are myriad animals in the world to learn from. The animal frolics Qigong is based on not just imitating animals, but on becoming them in your mind and body! The animals embody qualities and ways of being that we can learn to identify and relate to. The idea is to ask ourselves if we feel free to move from one quality to another and not be stuck favoring one particular quality. The law of energy is that it changes and needs to flow and move. Poets, players, and practitioners have written about the simplicity of animals and their lack of societal anxieties. The Five Animals correspond to the classic Five Elements (see below), and so they are a light and playful way way to explore Traditional Chinese Medicine concepts and get the benefits of traditional practices.

I think I could turn and live with animals, they are so placid and self-contain'd, I stand and look at them long and long

— Walt Whitman, poet
